Our pick, uncompensated
AyaSelva, Tamshiyacu (near Iquitos)
Family-run and deliberately small: six guests at most, medicine cooked on site, and a working curandero rather than a stage act. Seven days with four ceremonies runs $1,200 all-inclusive; twelve days with seven ceremonies, $1,800. Every guest fills in a health questionnaire first, and the center publishes its own contraindication list, which most small centers never bother to do.
People we know personally have sat with them and came back saying the same thing: it felt safe, unhurried and real. Reviews are few (about 29, all five stars, per their site) because the place is tiny. We recommend it for exactly that reason.

Screening and safety practice
Does the center ask for your medical history? Publish contraindications? Keep groups small enough to watch everyone? The big directories do not compare on this. We do, because it is the thing that keeps people safe.

How Much Does an Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru Cost?
Short answer
Most established centers in Peru charge about $1,000 to $3,000 for a week, all-inclusive. Short 3 to 5 day retreats start near $1,000; longer 10 to 14 day programs with more ceremonies run $2,000 to $4,500 at the better-known centers. Our recommended center, AyaSelva, sits under the middle of that range at $1,200 for seven days.

Iquitos, Sacred Valley, or Pucallpa: Where Should You Go?
Iquitos and the Amazon
The deep-jungle classic and where most serious Shipibo and Mestizo centers sit, including AyaSelva. Hot, humid, remote: you fly in, and that isolation is part of why the tradition is strongest here.
Cusco and the Sacred Valley
Cooler, easier logistics, and combinable with Machu Picchu. Altitude is real (Cusco sits at 3,400 m) and some centers here are medically staffed, which suits cautious first-timers.
Tarapoto and Pucallpa
The Shipibo heartland around Yarinacocha, plus Takiwasi's therapeutic tradition in Tarapoto. Fewer tourists, strong lineages, and the centers Reddit's regulars quietly rate highest.
Who Should Not Drink Ayahuasca?
This is the question a responsible site answers before selling you anything. Ayahuasca's harmala alkaloids are MAO inhibitors: combined with SSRI antidepressants they can trigger serotonin syndrome, which can kill. A history of psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, serious heart conditions, and pregnancy are all standing contraindications in the harm-reduction literature. Four deaths at Peru retreats are on public record, and each one traces back to screening or supervision that failed.

Ayahuasca Retreats in Peru: Your Questions Answered
Is ayahuasca legal in Peru?
Yes. Peru is one of the few countries where it is, and traditional use has been protected as National Cultural Heritage since a 2008 resolution. Retreat tourism operates legally but without a licensing system, which is exactly why vetting the individual center matters so much. Details in our legality guide.
What actually happens at an ayahuasca retreat in Peru?
Days are quiet: a restricted diet, rest, plant baths at some centers, preparation talks. Ceremonies happen at night, usually two to seven of them across a stay, guided by a curandero singing icaros. How many days do I need?
Most experienced voices, including the centers we rate highest, point first-timers to seven days and three to four ceremonies rather than a rushed weekend. Integration time between ceremonies is where the work happens. Longer 10 to 14 day programs suit people going deeper, not people going first.
Which retreat is safest for a solo woman?
Small centers with present owners and strong female staffing come up again and again in firsthand reports: Flower of Life in Iquitos is owned and run by a woman and praised for exactly this, and AyaSelva's six-guest cap means nobody disappears in a crowd.
